LHY Powertrain Pump Repair: When to Repair, Rebuild, or Replace

Repair an LHY Powertrain unit when one component has failed and the rest of the pump is clean. Rebuild it when the hours are high or metal has gone through the circuit. Replace it only when the housing is damaged beyond machining or the model no longer exists in any form. Most operators reach for replacement far too early, and they pay for it.

The confusion around LHY Powertrain pump repair is mostly a naming problem. If your nameplate says Linde and your search results say LHY, you are looking at the same hardware.

Linde Hydraulics Became LHY Powertrain, and Your Pump Did Not Change

Linde Hydraulics has undergone a brand change to LHY Powertrain, with its UK branch changing its name from Linde Hydraulics Limited to LHY Powertrain Limited on January 1, 2025. The company has been operating as an independent company since 2013 and celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2024.

None of these descriptions apply to the unit that is attached to your machinery. The HPV-02 closed-circuit variable pump, the HPR-02 open-circuit pump, the HMV-02 variable motor, and the HMF-02 fixed motor are all identical in terms of their capacities, similar rotating groups, same gaskets, and equivalent installation methods. So don’t hesitate to use both names for your inquiries regarding spare parts and services provided. The old spare parts databases, units, and service leaves are all still linked to the Linde name.

Repair When One Component Failed and the Rest of the Pump Is Sound

Choose a repair when the failure is isolated and traceable. A leaking shaft seal, a rough bearing, a control that stopped responding, a sticking servo piston: single-component jobs on a pump whose rotating group is still within spec.

Two conditions have to hold first:

  • The oil sample and filter come back clean, with no metal, so nothing was circulating debris
  • The unit’s hours are low enough that the parts you leave in place will outlast the parts you replace

That second condition gets skipped constantly. A new control on a pump with a worn rotating group buys you a few months and a second teardown. Ask for measured clearances before you approve a partial Linde hydraulic repair.

Rebuild When the Hours Are High, or Metal Went Through the Circuit

A full Linde pump rebuild is the right call when the rotating group has worn, when the unit has run a long service life, or when a failure put metal into the oil. A rebuild strips the pump to the housing and replaces the pistons, slipper plate, port plate, bearings, and every seal, then tests it against factory flow and pressure specs.

Metal decides it. Once a rotating group or bearing comes apart, debris travels the loop and embeds in every surface it touches, the motor included. Replacing the one failed part leaves that debris in place and the pump fails again on the same fault. Find metal, and you rebuild the pump and inspect the paired motor. LHY Powertrain motor repair on an HMF or HMV that shared a contaminated loop costs less than finding out later.

Rebuild pricing lands well under a new unit, which makes it the default for a pump that has already proven itself in your application. Wooster Hydrostatics handles hydrostatic pump repair on Linde units and stocks remanufactured HPV pumps.

Replace Only When the Housing Is Gone, or the Model Is Obsolete

Replacement belongs at the end of your list. Hydraulic pump castings outlive their internals by a wide margin, and almost every wear part inside an LHY or Linde unit can be replaced with genuine OEM components.

Three situations justify buying new:

  • The housing is cracked, or the bores are worn past what machining can recover
  • The application changed, and you need a different displacement or control
  • No parts and no core exist anywhere, which is rare on Linde piston pumps

Get a teardown inspection before you commit either way. A shop that opens the unit and reports measured wear gives you a real number to hold against a new pump quote.

Authorized Service Center or Independent Shop: What Actually Differs

While your units are still protected by factory warranty, turn to authorized service channels and scrutinize everyone else’s performance. LHY Powertrain has about 80 sales and service partners in more than 50 countries. Though covered under warranty and serviced through a Linde-authorized repair center, warranty claims and factory parts are processed by the manufacturer.

Outside of warranty, there are only minor practical distinctions. For one thing, you need to consider whether the repair shop uses OEM-approved parts rather than gray market resources, possesses ISO 9001:2015 certification, and can conduct a load test on your machine before shipping it. Wooster Hydrostatics is an independent service shop outside the LHY-approved network, providing service for Linde pumps and motors using OEM-approved parts and standardized (NIST-traceable) testing equipment rated for 1000 hp and 6000 psi.

All you need to do is ask any service shop this single question: What items do you test, and what standards do you follow during the test? If you get a solid answer to this question, that means you are close to finding a proper service shop.

Open the Pump Before You Price a New One

Once the pump is open, the choice between repair, rebuild, and replacement stops being a judgment call. Measured clearances and the oil sample tell you which path you are on, and guessing costs a second teardown three months later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LHY Powertrain the Same Company as Linde Hydraulics?

Yes, Linde Hydraulics became LHY Powertrain, and the change was officially implemented in the UK on 1 January 2025. The models and parts nomenclature remained unchanged, which means that servicing an HPV-02 or HMF-02 with either name should be done in the same way. Therefore, look for both names while searching for parts, cores, or maintenance records.

Yes. Independent shops handle LHY Powertrain pump repair using genuine OEM parts, and many carry ISO 9001:2015 certification with in-house test stands. Warranty work on a current unit should go through a Linde authorized repair center. For everything else, judge the shop on parts sourcing, test capability, and turnaround.

It is worth taking an oil sample to check the filter. If the oil is clean and the failure is localised, then repairs will need to be performed. If there are any foreign materials in the oil, or if the hours of the pump are high, the Linde pump will have to be refurbished, and the motor checked, as contamination will cause issues with both components in a closed loop.

Yes, in most cases, this is true, as the housing and shaft will outlast the internals, and rebuilding will be more cost-effective than manufacturing a new unit to achieve factory specifications for flow and pressure. Replacement usually becomes the best option when the housing is beyond machining or the application requires units with different displacement.
